How To Open Things

I found a new site today. The owner describes it as a cross between eBay and YouTube. It is called “HowToOpenThings“.

From the ‘about page’ is this explanation:

HowToOpenThings is a site to find videos that show how to open things. The members of HowToOpenThings define contests indicating what kinds of “how to open…” videos they want to see. Members also create the video entries for the contests. At HowToOpenThings, you can challenge people to create videos, submit your own videos, or view what other interesting “how to open” videos other members have submitted.

They use the term “contests” to mean an auction of sorts.

In a nutshell this is the process:

  1. A member submits a request for someone to make a video showing how to do something.
  2. They state how much they are willing to pay to see that video. - That makes them a judge for the ‘contest’. Other people can also purchase ‘voting rights’ at $1.00 a vote. These new votes are added to the ‘prize value’ of the video
  3. Members submit videos demonstrating how to do the thing that was asked
  4. The judges that have bought ‘voting rights’ nominate plus or minus votes for each video
  5. A winner is determined when one video has sustained the most votes for 72 consecutive hours

There are some weird requests, such as - How to open:
a funeral ceremony with a joke
a conversation with a mime
a watermelon while sky diving
a police car’s driver’s side door while he’s still there

As you can see, a lot of “contests” can’t be taken too seriously, but this site is a refreshing change from the standard way of viewing uploaded videos and is worth a look.
